My Pen Story

I recently attended a TOFW and it is very important that I have a pen to keep notes. For all of the great inspirational talks and things spoken, I want to be able to remember as much as I can at these events.

My "pen story" unfolded during a break on Saturday. We hurried from our seats to rush to the ladies room and I stuck my pink pen in the pocket of my jacket. After we returned to our seats, I checked my pocket and...no pen. I jumped from my seat and started looking around on the floor, visited the ladies room and asked the attendant there, looked around and found nothing. I finally thought there was no possible way of tracking down my pen. With added faith from recent talks at the event, I thought, "The Lord will provide." I went to the closest vendor counter and waited my turn in hopes that they would have an extra pen I could borrow. "Sure!" The nice young lady said. "Someone had left this pen here and so it is extra." My hope was fulfilled! An extra pen! Ha, what are the chances of that?! I looked down at the black pen and noticed that the clip was broken.

Returning to my seat, a little down-hearted about my prized pink pen that had not been recovered, I continued to take my notes during the next two speakers. I couldn't get it out of my mind about how I loved my pink pen. It was pink and I loved the way it wrote... it was then that the quiet prompting came to me. All of a sudden, I felt horribly ungrateful. Here I had a nice pen that worked just fine and all I could think about was that it just didn't measure up to my valued pink pen. Being tenderly reprimanded, I started to cry. I had been so ungrateful and yet the Lord HAD PROVIDED. My ungrateful heart turned quietly to the Lord in forgiveness. I all of a sudden had a love for this insignificant pen. I also learned a valuable lesson about gratitude. A few seconds later, my phone alarm buzzed and I reached for my purse. I opened up the black flap and, to my surprise, there it was! My pink pen neatly posed in the side pocket. I gasped! I had goosebumps all over and as quietly as possible, exclaimed, "My PINK PEN!" I immediately returned the borrowed black pen to the counter outside the auditorium; unfortunately, the vendor had momentarily left her seat, nonetheless, I hoped she would noticed that I had returned it.

Although this story may be about an insignificant pen, it was important that I was able to take notes during the event. More importantly, I was taught a lesson of my own by a loving Heavenly Father reprimanded by a still small voice.

I still have no recollection of placing my pink pen in the side pocket. ;)

Oh my heavens! I have my newest favorite movie... just finished watching Julie & Julia and I LOVED it. I even had to blog just now. Too bad I'm so horrible at keeping a journal. If you haven't seen it, I recommend.

So lately, here are some new fun things...

Our sweet youngling pup thinks she's a lap-dog. What she is is an over-grown high-energy Tasmanian devil with a chewing fetish. She's chewed through two collars. I am still amazed that she could get a hold of it while it's on her. But she is a fur ball of joy and tender-hearted. We love to have her. She has been going through a little itch fest and at one point, we tried "flea and tick itch" stuff. It made her back oily all the way down her spine and my son asked Daddy, "Daddy, did you give Ana a blessing?" - Good stuff there.

Today was raining. I love when it rains for the Parade of Homes. That way people don't fall in love with the area and go back to where they came from. Is that horrible? I just don't care much for crowds. So, to entertain ourselves, I cleaned out some clothes I don't wear and some toys and thought we'd go into town and drop them off at D.I. When my son asked what we were going to do, I said we were going in to drop some stuff off. He classically replied, "YOU'RE GOING TO THE DROP-OFF? BY YOURSELF?" - Seen Finding Nemo?

I've also tried to use my computer screen as a touch-screen at times. Let me just assume, aren't we all in transition with a touch world?

I won't go on forever just because I lack the ability to keep a daily post. Or even a weekly post. Take care everyone!

Talking to young children about drug & alcohol concerns

Preschoolers

Although 3- and 4-year-olds aren't ready to learn the facts about alcohol or other drugs, they start to develop the decision-making and problem-solving skills they will need later on. You can help them develop those skills in some simple ways.

For instance, let toddlers choose their own clothing and don't worry if the choices don't match. This lets them know you think they're capable of making good decisions. Assign simple tasks and let kids know what a big help they are.

And set a good example of the behavior that you want your kids to demonstrate. This is especially true in the preschool years when kids tend to imitate adults' actions as a way of learning. So, by being active, eating healthy, and drinking responsibly, parents teach their kids important lessons early on.

Ages 4 to 7

Kids this age still think and learn mostly by experience and don't have a good understanding of things that will happen in the future. So keep discussions about alcohol in the present tense and relate them to things that kids know and understand. For example, watching TV with your child can provide a chance to talk about advertising messages. Ask about the ads you see and encourage kids to ask questions too.

Kids are interested in how their bodies work, so this is a good time to talk about maintaining good health and avoiding substances that might harm the body. Talk about how alcohol hurts a person's ability to see, hear, and walk without tripping; it alters the way people feel; and it makes it hard to judge things like whether the water is too deep or if there's a car coming too close. And it gives people bad breath and a headache!

I have misplaced my "written" journal. Now where could it be?
I'm keeping track really for myself, but if you're inclined to read, do it! These are the simple journal entries that I might forget if I don't write them about my boy.

Juvenile Jargon:

Ear Egg = formally known as an earache.
Gorilla Bar = formally known as granola bar.

Just this morning, my 4 year old wants to sleep instead of getting up for school. He's not even a teen yet. As mothers do, I took the covers off exposing his warm cuddly skin to the harsh a/c temperature of a basement. After failed attempt, I picked him up out of his bed in which he proceeded to smack me on the chest and telling me to put him back in his bed "NOW". Honestly, what child tells their mother "now"? At least I didn't have to resort to the cold bucket of water... After his futile resistance, he conceded and asked for some chocolate milk and watch one of his "shows". Our children don't have any concept of the television prior to the ability to record our favorite shows. If it would have worked in the early 80s, we wouldn't have been stuck watching the President ON EVERY CHANNEL.

Last night around 9:30 pm, Kirk and I looked at our bank account and realized that we had $28 in our account to last us the next two weeks. After feelings of concern, we prayed. Then Kirk gave me a blessing. We felt all was going to be okay, though we didn't know how.

I have to share this miracle to you as my testimony of prayer.

This morning, Kirk called me and said he had found in our PO Box: a check from HUD for $1300, a check from our escrow for $170, and a check from the church for $30.

Back Surgery

On December 11th at 5:30 am, we arrived to the check-in desk. Kirk had Lumbar Back Surgery where they went in through his stomach (anterior), moved organs off to the side, and between L3 & L4, L4 & L5, had coils and screws put in and some bone graft that will eventually grow together. The doctor said he created an "environment" for the body to build itself. He is experiencing a lot of leg pain. It is a good time for time to pass and time to heal...

I wish I could be a better care-giver, but I kind of stink at it. I'll keep trying.

Parenthood update

For the blog diary update, this needs to be said. I am fairly certain that I've got an angel for a son. He's a normal toddler, don't get me wrong, with all the fussing and potty-training and pickiness in food, but overall my impression is he's pretty angelic.

At Christmas, when you open up a new present, he says in a throaty voice, "N-I-I-I-I-C-E!" You'd have to hear it to believe it. And just yesterday, we had our own little fashion show of underpants. He is interested in "sinking Cherrios®" and finding the little "pocket" in his brand new Cars® underpants. This was absolutely entertaining.

This past week, I am a working single mom. Kirk is up North working on a couple of projects. It's been a good growing experience and to my surprise not as complicated as I thought it might be. I guess I'll just have to enjoy this time by myself (except occasionally for Waylon) and eat ALL OF THE PEACH COBBLER! Note the famous "dip" in the background. This is my favorite mother-in-laws infamous recipe. Sorry to all who didn't take up the offer of coming to "enjoy the fruits of the season". Neener Neener Nee.

Our friends from Australia, Chuck & Chris sent a parcel to Waylon (and there was a letter and some pictures for us), but they sent a cute t-shirt and a fuzzy Koala all the way from Sydney, Australia. What nice friends! Do you think he likes it?

We are the first house people come to when their car breaks down. This happens 5-6 times a year at LEAST. Last night, we had a couple throw a belt and Kirk tried for 6 hours to fix it with a belt we had "on hand". Or in other words, Kirk actually makes use out of his junk collection. This couple was young and they had a 9-week old baby. Money was tight and they were on their way back home to Ohio after his military service in California. We fed them the rest of our KFC and put them up for the night. It's a dang good thing we aren't twisted like the creepy people in Motel Hell...o.

Officially, I was not on the clock during this nap. It was a planned 15 minute "cat nap". Kind of embarrassing to have a co-worker snap a picture on their phone. I was out nearly two hours. I had to post this just because it made me laugh so hard. How did they not know I was praying? It was too dang hot to sleep in my car; I can sleep mostly anywhere. I must have inherited some military attributes from Grampa.

May 30th, we went to the park. We had the whole play thing all to ourselves, but the slides were too hot to slide. Mom went down a couple and Waylon really thought that was funny.

We stayed and had Cheetos and punch and then went for a drive down Babylon Rd. We went pretty far in the little PT. The deep red sand was the funnest. Here are a couple pictures of Waylon at the park.

Day Care

Well, it is Waylon's first week at "school". I think it's been good for him once he's there, but as we all knew growing up, our preference is to be with mom or dad.

It's been a big week of adjustments and we've been dropping off to sleep like puppies. Any place, any time, anywhere.

Waylon is still saying lots of stuff. Like: "It will be fun!" and clapping at the same time.

Grandma is here!

This week has been fun having Grandma Anderson here. She has come to watch Waylon until the opening at daycare is available. Yeah, daycare. It frightens the crap out of us, but we have to go with the best we can do. We are sure it will be for the best, but you can't help the feelings of the "parenthood protection policy".

Friday, Grandma, mom & Waylon went to breakfast at the Bear Paw. It was really good and all went well. Sunday church was tipsy turvy. There were some things said in class about stay-at-home moms and the responsibility of mothers according to doctrine. Sakes, it's hard to sit in a room full of stay-at-home mothers. I don't know, but taking care of kids at home is really hard. I've always thought that's a noble job. Unfortunately I don't have that option and I carry regrets of how I could have formed my life differently as does Kirk. I was reassured from Kirk that we are doing the best we can and that's all Christ expects we can do. So that made me feel better, but still....being a mom who works and crams in the precious 2-3 hours I get with my son every night, I don't think if you've always been a stay-at-home mom, you could judge the emotional roller coaster and "should'ves" and shouldn't haves that us working mothers go through. I do know all mothers will do anything for their children. We just do the best we can.

I have had funky dreams about my high-school friends for the past few days. Also even some other past boyfriends. It's pretty funny, these dreams, but also these dreams always have the most true emotions involved.

What you are looking at here is a full box of Rice Baby Cereal distributed on the child's side of the car within 60 seconds or less. We should have taken the pictures before we removed said child from the car seat. This happened on Mother's Day 2008. Mother did receive 10 super-duper car wash/vacuum coupons 7 hours prior to this event. How coincidental! Daddy must have ESP....

A new beginning...

First of all, can anyone put me in traction? After a mild workout on the stationary bike, I found myself drying my hair following a shower. Somehow, towel in hand, I moved in a different direction than my body wanted and my back muscles have locked up ONCE again. The last time something of this nature happened, it was way back on April 23rd.....of this year. Well, as we all may have to have some issue to deal with, I guess this one is mine.

We had a great weekend and have decided to look at other options for Waylon's care during the day. We just think it is time for a change. I think at first it will be hard for him to understand this change, but in the long run, I think the interaction with other kids an different activities and/or learning techniques might be a good move. This is what we are hoping for. So it is a new beginning for us this week.

Yesterday, being Sunday, we went to church (actually made it on time!!!). Kirk went home teaching and so Waylon and I had the afternoon to play. He is 2 years 3 months now. I would like to express my feelings as we sat out on our porch swing. Waylon likes to sit beside me on the swing and eat Fritos, Cheetos, or Doritos. He has little cute "pea toes". He is just over 2! He sits with me for at least 30 minutes and we sit in silence, or talk, or make funny noises. This time he has decided to share with me is precious. I enjoy our time together because as you parents know, it is a bit different when you are one-on-one with your children. It's hard to describe, but as I go here on this blog, I will try to find words that will work the best.

Waylon's favorite foods right now are: candy, Fritos, Cheetos, chocolate, & meat (steak-type). Eating dinner is more successful when we're all sitting down at the table. His favorite pastimes are going to the Lake (in which he has made up several Lake songs as we drive by), playing in the sand, going to the park, going for a walk and most importantly, the ONE thing he absolutely could do all day is putter around in the shed with Dad.
